Christmas Tree Disposal in NYC

After the holiday season is over, here’s how to responsibly dispose of a Christmas tree in New York City:

1. Curbside Composting

  • How it works: If your building or residence participates in NYC’s curbside composting program, you can simply place your Christmas tree curbside next to your food scraps and yard waste bins. The tree will be collected on your regular compost collection day.
  • Important: Remove all ornaments, lights, tinsel, and the tree stand.
  • NYC Sanitation Department website for Curbside Composting: https://www1.nyc.gov/assets/dsny/site/services/food-scraps-and-yard-waste-page

2. MulchFest

  • How it works: MulchFest is an awesome way to recycle your tree and contribute to NYC’s green spaces! Bring your tree to a designated MulchFest location, where it will be chipped into mulch to nourish city trees. You may even take home a bag of mulch for your garden or street trees.
  • Dates: MulchFest typically runs from late December through early January.

Remember: Getting rid of your Christmas tree correctly helps keep NYC clean and supports a healthy environment!
